      6 volumes Condition: Very good. Minor worm damage in upper margins of maki 1 and 9 only. No soiling or stains. Impression: An early impression, sharp and clear. Seals of ownership: None. Manuscript notes: Donation note on mikaeshi of maki 1, addressed to an Englishman (Fontes ?) by Ōta Genjun, abbot of the Kōenji temple, Nagoya, and dated Meiji 26 (1893). It reads: 呈 普音天壽 / 大英國フオンテス氏閣下 / 明治廿六年三月 / 大日本帝國愛知縣名古屋市大津町 / 眞宗大谷派 / 光圓寺住職 / 大田元遵.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Mon ruijushō jikige 文類聚鈔直解. Author/compiler: Ryōkai 了海, Jōdo monk, author of commentary, d. 1674. Original work (Jōdomon ruijushō 浄土文類聚鈔) by Shinran Shōnin 親鸞聖人. Imprint: Kyōto, Araki Rihē, Kanbun 8, 1668. Mokki (colophon in double frame) on fol. 52 of maki 8 reads: 寛文戊申十月中旬 / 洛陽寺町通松原上ル町 / 荒木利兵衛開板. Description: 10 kan, 6 satsu. (Satsu 1) ff. 1-4 (preface), 5-22 (maki 1), 7 (maki 2); (satsu 2) ff. 16 (maki 3), 12 (maki 4); (satsu 3) ff. 12 (maki 5), 14 (maki 6); (satsu 4) ff. 15-34 (maki 7), 35-52 (maki 8); (satsu 5) ff. 41 (maki 9); (satsu 6) ff. 37 (maki 10). 26.8 x 18.4 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 21.5 x 16.8 cm. Double-line borders all round. Fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with printed okurigana and kaeriten. Large characters for Shinran's original text, smaller characters for Ryōkai's commentary. 8 lines to page (large characters), 16 (smaller characters); 14 characters to line (large characters), 18 to line (smaller characters). Original mid-blue covers, with original printed title slips on left. Gedai: 浄土文類直解. Naidai and gedai identical. Hashiragaki: Monrui jikige 文類直解 + maki no. + folio no. In a buckram slip-case. Edition: The first and only Edo-period edition, sponsored by the ganshu Chitai 智袋, whose name and kaō are printed in a double-line frame at the end of each satsu, as follows: 願主智袋 (花押). Unsigned preface at head of maki 1 is dated Kanbun 6, 1666, probably the date of completion of the work. Mokki quoted above under Imprint is printed, unusually, at end of maki 8 and not of maki 10. Contents: Detailed commentary by Ryōkai on the Jōdomon ruijushō 浄土文類聚鈔 a simplified exposition of Jōdo Shinshū doctrine written by the founder of the sect, Shinran 親鸞, c. 1255, and first printed in Keichō 7, 1602.
