      7 volumes Condition: Good, except for some stained folios and minor worm damage, skillfully repaired by urauchi with thin washi. Maki 1-10 lacking. Impression: Slightly atozuri, but still sharp and clear for the most part. Seals of ownership:None. Manuscript notes: Interlinear textual notes in red and black scattered throughout the text.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Nankashinkyō chūso kaikyō 南華眞經注疏解經 [南華真経注疏解経]. Author/compiler: Zhuang Zhou (周) 莊周, Daoist philosopher, author of original text. Guo Xiang (晉) 郭象, writer of commentary. Imprint: Kyōto. Nakano Sōzaemon, Manji 4, 1661. Kanki on fol. 22b of maki 33 reads: 萬治四辛丑暦仲春吉日 / 中野宗左衛門板行. Description: 27 kan (of 33), maki 1-4, 11-33, formerly in 5 satsu, subsequently bound in 1 vol. western style, now reconstituted as 7 satsu, sewn in Japanese style. In a modern chitsu case. ff. 4 (preface 序), 19; 38; 8; 27; 19; 28; 20; 21; 7; 7; 26; 10; 17; 15; 15; 20; 21; 26; 21; 12; 9; 14; 16; 4; 8; 13; 22. 269 x 225 mm. (average). Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printed frame 245 x 174 mm. (average). Single-line borders, with a further border above main text, containing printed headnotes. ''Flower petal'' fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with printed kunten and kaeriten. 8 lines to page (main text 本文), 16 lines (commentary-smaller ji), 21 characters to line. Renewed front cover of satsu 1 only, originally pale blue-green, colour now obscured by lining paper. Other front and back covers recently renewed with white stiff paper. Manuscript gedai on renewed title slip of satsu 1: 莊子郭註一二三四. Naidai: Nankashin-kyō chūso kaikyō 南華眞經注疏解經. Hashiragaki: Sōji naihen 莊子内篇 (gaihen 外篇, zatsuhen 雜篇) + maki no. + folio no. Edition: This edition of Manji 4 (1661) is the only pre-modern edition of text and commentary traced up to now. Contents: Collected works of the philosopher Zhuangzi 莊子, 33 in all, comprising all those which have survived. With extensive commentary traditionally attributed to Guo Xiang 郭象, but believed by some to have been written in large part by Xiang Xiu 向秀in the 3rd century. Text edited by Cheng Xuanying (唐) 成玄英.
