Printed frame 245 x 174 mm. (average). Single-line borders, with a further border above main text, containing printed headnotes. ''Flower petal'' fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with printed kunten and kaeriten. 8 lines to page (main text 本文), 16 lines (commentary-smaller ji), 21 characters to line. Renewed front cover of satsu 1 only, originally pale blue-green, colour now obscured by lining paper. Other front and back covers recently renewed with white stiff paper. Manuscript gedai on renewed title slip of satsu 1: 莊子郭註一二三四. Naidai: Nankashin-kyō chūso kaikyō 南華眞經注疏解經. Hashiragaki: Sōji naihen 莊子内篇 (gaihen 外篇, zatsuhen 雜篇) + maki no. + folio no. Edition: This edition of Manji 4 (1661) is the only pre-modern edition of text and commentary traced up to now. Contents: Collected works of the philosopher Zhuangzi 莊子, 33 in all, comprising all those which have survived. With extensive commentary traditionally attributed to Guo Xiang 郭象, but believed by some to have been written in large part by Xiang Xiu 向秀in the 3rd century. Text edited by Cheng Xuanying (唐) 成玄英.
