      1 volume Condition: Fair to good. Worm damage considerable, especially in maki 上, but chiefly confined to margins. Some water stains. Impression: Clear and sharp, shozuri or near. Illustrations: Sumizuri woodcuts on every page, depicting banners, insignia, helmets, horse trappings and other military accoutrements. Seals of ownership: Large square blue seal, 子孫永保 / 雲煙家藏書記 (seal of Kashima Seibē 鹿島清兵衞), on mikaeshi. Square red bookplate (蔵書票), Aoki in 青木印 (of Aoki Nobutora 青木信寅), pasted on front cover of book.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Shoshō kiseizu 諸將旗旌圖 [諸将旗旌図]. Author/compiler: Tani Shigemichi 谷重通 (named in batsu). Imprint: N.p., n.d. (preface and batsu dated Kan'ei 14 寛永十四年, 1637). Last two lines of batsu following maki 下 read: 寛永十四稔星集丁丑孟夏初吉 / 長門後學河野忘巷子春察書. Description: 3 kan, formerly in 3 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 上) ff. [1, 序] , [2, 目録] , 46; (中) ff. [2, 目録] , 57; (下) ff. [1, 目録] , 31, [2, 跋] . 32.8 x 25.4 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame varies between 27.6 and 29.3 x 23.4 cm, Single-line borders all round, except in preface and batsu which lack borders. No printed hanshin. Folios are numbered on inner edge of each fold. Kanbun text in preface and batsu, printed in gyōsho and kaisho respectively. Elsewhere, kanji captions to illustrations only. Renewed front cover (mid-Edo period) of satsu 上 only, without title slip. Manuscript gedai: 御指物揃 寛永板. Title from head of mokuroku in each maki. No other naidai. Title at head of preface: Kishizu 旗幟圖. Book rebound in half-leather, western style. Edition: The only recorded Edo-period edition of this work. Contents: A collection of woodblock illustrations of the above subjects, used by warrior families including Tokugawa Ieyasu, Hidetada 秀忠 and all the fudai daimyō 譜代大名. Preface signed by Shūtetsu 愚齋周哲. Batsu written and signed by Kōno Shunsatsu 河野春察. The compiler's name, Tani Shigemichi 谷重通, appears only in the batsu.
