      4 volumes Condition: Very good. Minor worm damage at inner margins skilfully repaired. Impression: An early printing from little-worn blocks. Some over-inking. Seals of ownership: Small red seal, Getsumeisō 月明莊 (seal of Kōbunsō) on last page of each vol. Also a printed label (relatively modern) attached to each front cover, reading 觀智院金剛藏聖教 with shelfmark, indicating that this copy once belonged to the Kanchiin, Tōji, Kyōto. Manuscript notes: As well as manuscript kunten noted above, there are commentary notes in pale ink on front and back endpapers of maki 3. The signature Kōhō 杲寶 (same hand as writer of gedai) on the front cover of each satsu refers to the learned monk Kōhō, founder of the Kanchiin, Tōji monastery, and author of many notable Buddhist works.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Zhifu 志福, Chinese monk. Imprint: Kōyasan, Kongō Sanmai-in 金剛三昧院, Ryōshun 良俊, Kōan 5, 1282. Kango on last 2 folios of maki 4 reads: 弘安五年壬午九月六日於高野山金剛三昧院 / 金剛佛子性海書 / 弘安五年壬午十月廿一日於高野山金剛三 / 昧院淨場通玄鈔四巻爲備規摸謹開印板畢 / 捧此弘願之功徳奉資三所之聖靈所謂武 / 門御恩所東関右將府并二品禪定比丘尼 / 兼當院家本願聖靈也至佛子者縱留連三 / 界之幻城必値遇佛法僧興三寶之妙道縱 / 跉跰十方之穢國不退轉菩提心救無餘之 / 含識今不耐先彼後我之思聊以記誓心短 / 慮之旨而已 / 金剛三昧院老比丘良俊記之. Description: 4 kan, 4 jo 帖, contained in a wooden box. Folios unnumbered. 25.7 x 15.6 cm. Bound in detchō style, with traces of coloured silk backing pasted along spine. Blockprint on good quality ganpi paper, printed on both sides of the leaf. Printing frame 21 x 12.3 cm. No borders or vertical rules. Kanbun text, with handwritten okurigana (c. late-Kamakura period) in black katakana and some reading marks in red. 7 lines to page, 19 characters to line. Original yellow-brown covers. No title slips. Original handwritten gedai on each satsu: 釋摩詞衍論抄. At top right of each gedai appears the character 阿, and at bottom right of each cover the signature Kōhō 杲寶 (see under manuscript notes below). Title from naidai at head of each maki. Edition: Kōya-ban, published at the Kongō Sanmai-in (centre of publishing activity at Kōyasan) by the monk Ryōshun 良俊, 10th in the line of chōrō 長老 at the Sanmai-in. This edition is notable for its long and informative kango, unique among surviving Kōya-ban, which documents the origins of this edition. It is preceded by a one-line reprinted kanki of the Korean edition of 1099 on which this is based, and a three-line account of how the original was brought over from Korea by Fujiwara no Suenaka 藤原季仲 in Chōji 2 長治二年 (1105). This Kōya-ban appears to be the only pre-Edo edition of the work. Bussho kaisetsu daijiten 仏書解説大辞典 records a later edition of Shōhō 3, 1646. Contents: Commentary by the monk Zhifu on the Shi moheyanlun 釋摩訶衍論, itself a commentary on the Daijō kishinron 大乘起信論 (Mahāyāna-śraddhotpāda-śāstra), translated into Chinese between 499 and 569. The work opens with a 3-page preface by the Tianyou 天佑 Emperor. Shaku makaenron is a work of some importance in Shingon Buddhism.
