  • Physical Description
1 volume Condition: Fair to good. Worm damage (unrepaired) on covers and in places throughout text. Brown stains on first 6 folds. Impression: An carly impression, sharp and clear (shozuri), printed with thick, jet-black ink. Seals of ownership: Small square red seal printed inkoku, Gyōe 行惠, on inner back cover, relating to the shikigo quoted above. Manuscript notes: The text contains interlinear textual notes and headnotes in black ink, in addition to the kunten noted above, and apparently in the same hand. A ganmon dated Shōō 3 (1290), written in black ink following the last line of printing on final fold reads: 願以摺寫力 迴慈父幽靈 / 并法界衆生 共證菩提果 / 正應三年二月十六日 亀夜叉丸 生年十四. This is followed by one line in a different hand: 興正菩薩遷化之年也. The name of a former (pre-Edo period) owner, 定現, appears below the ganmon. Finally, a 4-line shikigo signed by a monk Gyōe 行惠 records that the book was repaired and re-covered in the first month of the year Enkyō 3 延享三年 (1746), as it was then in a damaged state.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler:. Illustrator: Kumārajīva (Chinese: Jiumaluoshi (姚秦) 鳩摩羅什), according to tradition, but probably by a Chinese translator of the Song period. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [Fukkoku of the Jōkyū 2 承久二年 (1220) edition published by Jōgan 乘願] . No kanki or kango. Description: 1 kan, 1 jō 帖 in 49 folds, comprising maki 上 only. 26.4 x 9 cm. (each half-fold). Originally in roll form (巻子本), now in orihon form. Blockprint. Printing frame (height) 21.5 cm. No borders above or below. No vertical rules between columns. Kanbun text, with manuscript kunten added at an early date. 5 lines to half-fold, 17 characters to line. Renewed mid-blue covers, with handwritten gedai on a renewed title slip decorated with a geometric and floral pattern in green and grey. Gedai (damaged in centre) reads: 梵網經菩薩心・・・ 巻上 全. Title from naidai on last fold of printed text. In a modern blue chitsu case. Text paper: ganpi. Edition: Kasuga-ban. Although this copy is not dated and contains no kanki, comparison with other copies indicates that the present edition is closely modelled on the Jōkyū 2 承久二年 (1220) edition published at the Hōryūji 法隆寺 by the monk Jōgan 乘願. The present copy is; almost certainly, a fukkoku edition printed from re-cut blocks closely imitating the original Jōkyū 2 (1220) edition. . Of the original kango, only the following two lines appear in the present copy, below the bidai: 校合太子御 / 本彫此經了. This indicates a text printed as a result of collation with a manuscript of Shōtoku Taishi Contents: The Brahmajāla-sūtra, a basic Vinaya work on disciplinary rules in Mahāyāna Buddhism. Stated, in the original Chinese preface, to be the tenth chapter of a much larger work, Bodhisattva-śīla-sūtra.
