      1 volume Condition: Very good. Impression: Atozuri, from blocks showing some signs of wear. Illustrations: Sumizuri frontispiece depicting Mount Sumeru on mikaeshi, followed by a diagram of phases of the moon on fol. 1a. Small vignette figure studies on ff. 17a-18b. Seals of ownership: Octagonal British Museum stamp, MVSEVM BRITANNICVM, on fol. 20a. Manuscript notes: A few notes in Kaempfer's hand on title slip and upper border of ff. 1b-2a. A paper strip, with notes on this book also in Kaempfer's hand, has been bound in between mikaeshi and fol. 1.

Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Shōhon'ya Kyūbē, Enpō 8, 1680. Kanki on fol. 20a reads: 延宝八歳庚申五月吉日 正本屋 / 九兵衛板. Description: 1 kan, 1 satsu, formerly bound in western style together with nos. 496, 497 and 500. ff. 20. 218 x 162 mm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 194 x 148 mm. (average). Single-line borders. Fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with dakuten and kutōten but few furigana. 18 lines to page, variable no. of characters to line. Original black covers embossed with a lattice and peony design. Original title slip on left with printed gedai: 新板 / 繪入 (角書) 増補大ざっしょ. No naidai. Title from gedai. Hashiragaki: Ō-zassho 大さつ書 + folio no. Edition: Numerous 17th century editions are known, beginning with one dated Kan'ei 9 (1632). The present copy purports to be of an enlarged (zōho 増補) edition. Contents: A Chinese work, derived from the Liji 禮記, on the ancient form of the calendar, whereby the year is divided into 72 periods each of 5 days, based on the occurrence of natural phenomena. This is the first work, 七十二候, in this composite volume. It is followed by a Japanese commentary, 七十二候鈔, by Kusa Dōin on the same work, and by a third work by the same author entitled Saiji [kojitsu] 歳時 [故實] , on seasonal festivals.
