Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Taehyŏn 太賢, Korean Buddhist monk from Silla, b. 753. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [mid-Kamakura period, c. 1250-60] . See under Edition below. Description: 1 roll (kansubon 巻子本), originally in orihon form, now rebacked and made up as a roll. In a wooden box. Width of each orihon fold: 15 cm. Height: 27.2 cm. Kan ge 巻下 only, comprising 本 section and lacking matsu 末. Blockprint. Printing frame (height) 22.2 cm. No borders. No rules between columns of text. Kanbun text, with manuscript kutōten in red and kunten in black katakana, dating from late-Kamakura or early-Muromachi period. 8 lines to each orihon fold, 21 characters to line. Protective cover of modern brown brocade, probably added when the roll was rebacked. Ivory rollers. No title slip. Title from naidai. Kōzo paper. Edition: Saidaiji-ban 西大寺版. Two early dated editions of this work are recorded, both printed at the Saidaiji. The present copy, incomplete and lacking a kanki, seems likely to belong to the earlier edition of the two printed in Shōka 3 正嘉三年 (1259) and containing the following kanki: 正嘉三年二月十八日終寫功訖 / 執筆沙門慈政. The later edition, with kanki dated Shōan 4 正安四年 (1302), has only 5 lines to the half-fold. Contents: A commentary on the Bonmōkyō 梵網經 (Brahmajāla-sūtra), a basic scripture of the Vinaya sects concerning the Buddha's precepts for the moral conduct of monks and nuns. Early printed editions of this and other commentaries on the Bonmōkyō are confined to volume 2 巻下, since the contents of the first volume are less relevant to Vinaya teaching. Volume 2 consists of two sections, hon 本 and matsu 末, of which the latter is missing from this copy.
