      1 volume Condition: Fair. Considerable worm damage, especially in upper and lower margins, and many folios are water-stained and discoloured. Impression: Not shozuri, but sharp and clear, showing evidence of only slight wear on blocks. Seals of ownership: Small square blue stamp (unidentified) on first page of maki 1. Manuscript notes: A few textual headnotes in black, sparsely scattered in upper margins.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Huaiyuan 懷遠, Chinese monk,11th century. Imprint: N.p., Kan'ei 9,1632. Kanki printed, unusually, on fol. 54a of maki 1 reads: 尓時寛永九壬申歳初夏吉日 開板之. Description: 6 kan, formerly in 6 satsu, rebound in 1 vol. western style. (1) ff. 1 (序), 54; (2) ff. 47; (3) ff. 53; (4) ff. 45; (5) ff. 46; (6) ff. 49. 28.1 x 17.1 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 22 x 16 cm. (average). No borders. 'Flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text with printed okurigana and kaeriten. 10 lines to page, 20 characters to line. Renewed light blue front cover of satsu 1 only, embossed with a floral motif. Renewed title slip with manuscript gedai: 首楞嚴經義疏釋要. Title from naidai at head of each maki. Hashiragaki: Shakuyō 釈要 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: Apparently the earliest blockprinted edition of this work to be published in the Edo period. Preceded by two Gozan-ban editions, one dated Kannō 1 観応元年 (1350), the other undated (see GK, pp. 112, 383). The present edition was followed by other seihan editions published, according to Ōtani and Ryūkoku catalogues, in Keian 1 慶安元年 (1648) and Kanbun 13 寛文十三年 (1673). Contents: A sequel to Zixuan's Shuryōgon-gyō gisho 首楞嚴經義疏 or Shuryōgon gisho chūkyō 首楞嚴義疏注經 (see no. 216 above), itself a commentary on the Śūraṃgama-sūtra, explaining key points of doctrine in the commentary. Written by Zixuan's disciple Huaiyuan, c. 1061 (date of author's preface, 嘉祐辛丑).
