      1 volume Condition: Generally good, with a few water-stained folios at beginning and ink stains on last folio. Many folios split at fore-edge. Impression: Sharp and clear, with only slight evidence of block wear. Illustrations: A total of 55 single-page sumizuri woodcuts illustrating episodes from Genji monogatari 源氏物語, 25 in maki 上 and 30 in maki 下. Seals of ownership: Large oblong red seal, Chikurei sōka 竹冷挿架 (seal of Tsunoda Chikurei 角田竹冷), another small oval red seal of Chikurei, and an oval green seal, all on blank fol. 1a of maki 上.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Kojima Sōken 小島宗賢 and Suzumura Nobufusa 鈴村信房 (joint compilers, named in closing note (kōjo 後序) by Sohaku 素栢 on last folio verso of book). Imprint: [Kyōto ?] , Dodo Ichibē, Manji 3, 1660. (See note on Edition below.) Sohaku's kōjo ends with the following kanki: 萬治庚子臘月之日偶應其需妄識 / 其後 洛下素栢撰 / 度々市兵衛開板. Description: 2 kan, 1 satsu, in a chitsu case. (Maki 上) ff. 29; (maki 下) ff. 32, [2] (後序). Maki and folio numbering on inner edge of each leaf, half-concealed by binding. 26.2 x 17.1 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 19.5 x 15.3 cm. (average). No borders, except round illustrations. No printed hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, without furigana or punctuation. 10 lines to page, variable no. of characters to line. Original dark blue covers, now flaking, with rhomboid design faintly embossed. Fragments of original printed title slip on left, with upper part of gedai: 源氏鬢□. Title from first line of kōjo 後序. Edition: This edition by Dodo Ichibē with kōjo 後序 dated Manji 3 (1660) appears to be the earliest. It has text and illustrations printed on separate facing pages. Contents: Haikai poems by Teitoku, Kigin, Moritake and others, each with a brief note epitomising one of the 54 chapters of Genji monogatari, accompanied by a scene from that chapter. Opening preface by the compilers, ff. 1-4, and closing note (kōjo) signed by Sohaku 素栢 on unnumbered folios at end of book.
