      10 volumes Condition: Poor to fair. Worm damage in most maki. Many folios soiled and water-stained. Impression: Atozuri, from considerably worn blocks. Illustrations: A total of 88 single-page sumizuri illustrations, printed on recto and verso of the same folio in each case. Most depict battle scenes, and most bear printed captions in upper corner. Distribution is as follows: (maki 1) 10 folios, (2) 10, (3) 8, (4) 6, (5) 12, (6) 8, (7) 8, (8) 8, (9) 8, (10) 10. The illustrated folios are not numbered separately from the main foliation, but bear the number of the preceding folio. Seals of ownership: Square red seal, Hayashi Tadamasa shozōin 林忠正所藏印, on first page of maki 1. Another square red seal of Hayashi Tadamasa, printed inkoku, 林忠正印, is impressed on first and last pages of most other maki (2-10).

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Miura Jōshin 三浦淨心, 1565-1644. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Fūgetsu Shōzaemon, Manji 2, 1659. Kanki on last folio of maki 10 reads: 萬治二己亥歳初春 / 風月庄左衞門板行. Description: 10 kan, 10 satsu, in a box. (1) ff. 27; (2) ff. 30; (3) ff. 39; (4) ff. 25; (5) ff. 33; (6) ff. 29; (7) ff. 25; (8) ff. 27; (9) ff. 21; (10) ff. 24. A 1-folio preface precedes the mokuroku 目録 of maki 1. 25.9 x 18.4 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 20.5 x 16.5 cm. (average). No borders. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text with printed furigana. 12 lines to page, 20-24 characters to line. Mid-blue covers, probably original (i. e. contemporary with date of impression), embossed with a floral and leaf pattern. Printed title slips of similar date on maki 3, 4, 6-10. Renewed title slip on mica-sprinkled paper, with manuscript gedai, on maki 1. Gedai: 北條五代記. Title from naidai at head of each maki. Hashiragaki: Hōjōki 北條記 + maki no. + folio no. Edition: Second edition of a work first published in Kan'ei 18 寛永十八年, 1641. Contents: A collection of war tales (gunki monogatari 軍記物語) and anecdotes recounting the rise and fall of the Later Hōjō (後北條) warrior family of Odawara, from the time of Hōjō Sōun (1432-1519) to the defeat of Hōjō Ujinao (1562-91) by Hideyoshi. Compiled, probably by the author himself, from a longer work also by Miura Jōshin entitled Keichō kenmonshū 慶長見聞集, of which manuscript copies survive.
