  • Physical Description
1 volume Condition: Good, except for soiled corners. Although without worm damage, the book appears to have been re-backed by urauchi. Cropped at top and bottom. Impression: Sharp and clear, with only slight signs of wear on blocks. Illustrations: 14 double-page sumizuri illustrations occupy the lower three-quarters of each pair of folios. The artist is not named, but the style is clearly that of Hishikawa Moronobu. This attribution is supported by the kanki (see above) in Lane's copy of Kōshoku sewa ezukushi. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal, Fukuda bunko 福田文庫, on fol. 1b. Another oblong red real, Shisei zō 只誠藏 (seal of Sekine Shisei 關根只誠), on fol. 2a. Manuscript notes: Note in gyōsho / sōsho in black ink on sheet supplied in place of missing fol. 15b at end of book: 右は菱川吉兵衛師信の画之. According to Professor Torigoe Bunzō, this and the manuscript gedai on front cover are in the hand of Ōta Nanno (Shokusanjin) 大田南畝 (蜀山人).

Scope and Content

Variant title: Yamatoe no kongen 大和繪のこんげん [大和絵のこんげん ]. Variant title: Kōshoku ehon taizen 好色繪本大全 [好色絵本大全]. Author/compiler: Unknown, but based on Kōshoku ichidai otoko 好色一代男 by IHARA Saikaku 井原西鶴. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [most probably Edo, Urokogataya 鱗形屋 Jōkyō 3 貞享三年, 1686]. Description: 1 kan (of 2 or 4), 1 satsu, rebound in western style. ff. 15. 25.7 x 18.1 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 23.5 x 17.3 cm. (average). Double-line borders round each page. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with printed dakuten. 20 lines to page, 8 characters to line. Vermilion front cover, probably not original, with renewed title slip on upper half bearing manuscript gedai: Hishikawa Moronobu mukashi ehon 菱川師宣むかし絵本 (believed by Prof. Torigoe Bunzō to be in the hand of Ōta Nanpo 大田南畝). No naidai. Title from information given in Nihon koten bungaku daijiten 日本古典文学大辞典, vol. 2, p. 495, and in Saikaku 西鶴 (Tenri Toshokan), p. 112. Hashiragaki: 好色二之 (or ノ) + folio no. Edition: According to available evidence, this work seems to have been published in two parts: (1) Yamatoe no kongen 大和繪のこんげん in 2 kan, 2 satsu (title from daisen of Tōyō Bunko copy), and (2) Kōshoku sewa ezukushi 好色世話繪づくし, also in 2 kan, 2 satsu (title from the unique copy owned by Richard Lane). The 4 kan together, comprising (1) and (2) above, are also known by the title Kōshoku ehon taizen 好色繪本大全, but it is not clear under which title the work was first issued, as both of the surviving copies (in Tōyō Bunko and BL) lack folio la and folio 15b. The sole surviving copy of maki 3 and 4, owned by Richard Lane, bears the printed gedai: Kōshoku ehon taizen 好色繪本大全 mokurokudai: Kōshoku sewa ezukushi 好色世話繪づくし, and the following printed kanki: 大和畫工菱河氏師宣 / 貞享參暦寅正月吉日 / 大傳馬町三町目 / 鱗形屋開板. Contents: An abbreviated version of chapters 3 and 4 of Saikaku's Kōshoku ichidai otoko 好色一代男. Text printed in the upper one-quarter of each page, with Moronobu's illustrations below.
