Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Dōkō 道光 (writer of commentary), also known as Ryōe 了慧, founder of the Goshinji temple. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Suzuki Tahē, Enpō 7, 1679. Kanki on fol. 68b of maki 7 reads: 延寶己未仲秋十日勘文校正訖印 / 鈴木太兵衛刋行. Description: 7 kan, formerly in 7 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (1) ff. 67; (2) ff. 64; (3) ff. 55; (4) ff. 62; (5) ff. 49; (6) ff. 67; (7) ff. 68. 27 x 19.2 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 24.2 x 17.2 cm. (average). Single-line borders. Within these, single-line borders enclose a smaller frame containing the original text, whilst the commentary occupies spaces in margins above, inner left and inner right. Fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with printed okurigana and kaeriten. 9 lines to page (large characters), 18 lines (small characters), 17 characters to line (main text only). Renewed light blue front cover of satsu 1 only, with embossed hexagonal and floral repeat pattern. Renewed title slip on left with manuscript gedai: 無量壽經鈔 一. Title from naidai at head of main text of each maki. Hashiragaki: Bōsai (?) 望西 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: The second blockprinted edition, following movable type editions in Keichō 19 and 20 (1614, 1615) and the first seihan in Kan'ei 8 (1631). Contents: Text of Kangsengkai's Chinese translation of the Muryōjukyō 無量壽經 (Skt. Sukhāvatī-vyūha, Aparimitāyuḥ-sūtra), with accompanying commentary by the Japanese monk Dōkō 道光 (Ryōe 了慧) completed in Einin 3 (1295).
