      1 volume Condition: Negligible worm damage, otherwise very good. Impression: Slightly atozuri. The style of the undated kanki suggests an impression of early 18th century. (Ogawa Tazaemon was active from Tenna to end of Edo period.). Seals of ownership: Red oblong seal of Sir Ernest Satow, 英國薩道藏書, on first page of maki 上.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Chūtenjiku shaekoku Gionji zukyō 中天竺舎衞國祇洹寺圖經 [中天竺舎衛国祇洹寺図経]. Author/compiler: Daoxuan 道宣, 596-667. Imprint: Kyōto, Ogawa Tazaemon, n.d. (Preface dated Tenna 1, 1681.) Okuzuke reads: 京師書房 / 六角通寺町西江入町 / 柳枝軒小川多左衞門刻. Description: 2 kan, 1 satsu. (Maki 上) ff. 4 (preface), 34; (maki 下) ff. 37. 26.2 x 18.7 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 22-22.5 x 15.5 cm. Single-line borders with lower part of hanshin printed black. Kanbun text with printed okurigana and kaeriten. 8 lines to page, 18 characters to line. Original mid-blue covers, within a western style cloth binding. Original title slip on left, with printed gedai: 舎衞國祇洹寺圖經上下. Naidai: Chūtenjiku shaekoku Gionji zukyō 中天竺舎衞國祇洹寺圖經. Hashiragaki: Gion zukyō jō (ge) 祇洹圖經上 (下) + folio no. Edition: The only edition issued in Edo period, dated Tenna 1 天和元年 (1681) in preface and batsu (maki 下, fol. 36a). Contents: A work purporting to describe the origins, history and layout of buildings in the Jetavana-vihāra monastery (Gion shōja 祇園精舎), reputedly the first monastic establishment in India.
