      1 volume Condition: Fair to good. Some folios are soiled and water-stained. Impression: Atozuri from moderately worn blocks. llustrations: A total of 32 single-page sumizuri woodcuts corresponding to the 32 episodes in the life of Nichiren 日蓮 (1222-82). Illustrations are similar in subject matter to those described on p. 27 of the Ryerson Catalogue, but none occupies more than one page and there is no indication of their derivation from a picture scroll like the Ryerson copy. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal, 英國阿須頓藏書 (ex-libris William George Aston).

Scope and Content

Variant title: E-iri Nichiren ichidaiki 繪入日蓮一代記 [絵入日蓮一代記]. Author/compiler: Nitchō 日澄, Nichiren priest, 1441-1510. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [Tenna 3, 1683 ?]. No kanki. Description: 5 kan, formerly in 3 satsu, rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 1) ff. 1-9a; (2) ff. 9b-15; (3) ff. 16-22; (4) ff. 23-34; (5) ff. 35-42. (Continuous numbering of folios.) 25.2 x 18.1 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 22 x 17 cm. (average). Single-line borders round each page. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with some printed furigana. 15 lines to page, 24-26 characters to line. Renewed dark blue front cover of satsu 1 only, with original printed title slip on left. Gedai: E-iri (tsunogaki) Nichiren ichidaiki 繪入 (角書) 日蓮一代記上. Naidai at head of mokuroku 目録 and of maki 3, 4 and 5: Chūgasan 註畫讃. Hashiragaki: Nichiren 日蓮 + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: There is a superficial resemblance between this undated edition and the illustrated edition published in Kanbun 11 寛文十一年 (1671), but they are by no means identical. The present edition is evidently printed from re-cut blocks, closely modelled on the edition of 1671, but with unmistakable differences in jikei and hanshiki (cf. ORB.30/308). The blocks for illustrations have also been re-cut. Contents: An account of 32 major events in the life of Nichiren 日蓮 (1222-82), founder of the Nichiren sect.
