Imprint: Kyōto, Murakami Sōshin, Tanaka Chōzaemon, Kan'ei 8, 1631. Kanki on fol. 14b of maki 5 reads: 寛永八年辛未孟春吉辰 ／ 二条村上宗信 ／ 玉屋町田中長左衛門 開板. Description: 5 kan, 2 satsu, bound in 1 vol. (western style). (1) ff. 1, 2, 25; (2) ff. 27; (3) ff. 29; (4) ff. 46; (5) ff. 14. 27.5 x 18.8 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 21 x 17 cm. Double-line borders, one thick, one thin, with 'flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Vertical rules. Text in kanji, with some printed kunten. 10 lines to page, 17 characters to line. Blue (original ?) front cover of satsu 1 only, within western-style half-leather binding. No title slip. Handwritten gedai: 新刻多識編 上, dating from early Edo period. Naidai: Shinkan tashikihen 新刋多識編. Hashiragaki: Tashiki 多識 + maki no. + folio no. Edition: The first blockprinted edition, preceded by the first movable type edition in the previous year, Kan'ei 7, 1630. Followed by many undated editions. Contents: A classified dictionary of names of plants, animals and natural phenomena, chiefly drawn from the botanical work Honzō kōmoku 本草綱目, with phonetic readings and meanings set out in man'yōgana. Modelled on a Chinese (Ming 明) work of the same title, classifying botanical terms, etc., from the 詩經.
