      1 volume Condition: Excellent. Impression: Atozuri. (From a separately-printed list of publications offered by the two publishers Nagata Chōbē 永田調兵衞 (Bunshōdō) and Hishiya Matabē 菱屋亦兵衞 (Bunrindō), appended at end of book, it is apparent that this impression may be dated anywhere between c. 1780 and 1850, probably c. 1830-40.) For another copy with publisher's name given in kanki, see no. 103 below. Seals of ownership: Red oblong seal of Sir Ernest Satow, 英國薩道藏書, on first page.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Hasshū kōyō shō 八宗綱要抄. Author/compiler: Gyōnen 凝然, Kegon priest, also known as Gyōnen Daitoku 凝然大德, 1240-1321. Imprint: N.p., Jōō 2 1653. Kanki reads: 承慶二稔季春吉旦 / 開板. Preceded by an earlier batsubun, dated Genki 2 元亀二年 (1571), containing a note on this work and its compiler, Gyōnen. Description: 2 kan, formerly in 1 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (上) ff. 24; (下) ff. 31. 25.9 x 18 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 21.2 x 15.2 cm. Double-line borders, with 'flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text with printed okurigana (katakana) and kaeriten. 10 lines to page, 20 characters to line. Original yellow covers with printed title slip. Gedai: 八宗綱要. Naidai: Hasshū kōyō shō 八宗綱要抄. Hashiragaki: Kōyō jō (ge) 綱要 上 (下) + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: The earliest printed edition. Followed by revised editions in Bunsei 10 and 11, 1827-28. Contents: A brief summary of the transmission of Buddhism from India to China and Japan, and of the history and doctrines of the eight sects (hasshū) of Japanese Buddhism. Written by Gyōnen in or about Bun'ei 文永五年, 1268.
