  • Physical Description
1 volume Condition: Good, apart from a few worm holes and water-staining in upper margins of maki 1-2. Impression: Atozuri, but (surprisingly) the blocks appear to show fewer signs of wear than those used for printing the tanbatsu edition described above. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal, Zeze Reishōin zō 膳所靈照院藏, on first page of each satsu. Manuscript notes: Shikigo in red, dated Bunsei 13 (1830), on back mikaeshi reads: 文政十三庚寅年修飾豪榮. A few kutōten in red scattered through text, in addition to kunten noted above.

Scope and Content

Alternative reading of title: Rongo shūkai. Author/compiler: He Yan 何晏, 3rd century. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [late-Muromachi period, c. 1530-70] . No colophon. This is an example of the Shōhei-ban Rongo, ''mubatsu-bon'' 正平版論語無跋本 (see below under Edition). Description: 10 kan, formerly in 5 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. 25.7 x 20.5 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame varies between 21 and 22 x 18.5 cm. (average). Single-line borders all round. Vertical rules between columns. No fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with manuscript kunten and kaeriten in a small, neat hand of late-Muromachi period. 6 lines to page (large characters), 12 lines (smaller characters), 13 large characters to line. Renewed dark blue front cover (old but not original) of satsu 1 only. No title slip. Manuscript gedai in red ink of late-Edo period: 論語集解. Hashiragaki: [no title] , maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding, now badly scuffed. Text paper: kōzo of above-average thickness. Edition: Gozan-ban. A later reprint of the Shōhei-ban Rongo, printed from the same blocks as the tanbatsu 単跋 edition described above. It differs from the latter only in that the kango (or batsu) bearing the name of publisher and date of the original Shōhei 19 (1364) edition has been erased from the printing block, leaving no imprint. Bearing in mind that three surviving copies of the mubatsu 無跋 edition contain shikigo dated Genki 2 (1571), it seems certain that this mubatsu edition was printed at some time between c. 1500 and 1570. Contents: Commentary on the text of the Confucian Analects, compiled by He Yan and other scholars in the Wei period. Superseded in the Song by the commentary of Zhu Xi 朱熹.
