      1 volume Condition: Fair to good. No worm damage, but many folios are soiled or stained. Damaged corners repaired by urauchi patching. Impression: For the most part sharp and clear, with only occasional signs of wear on blocks. Seals of ownership: None. Manuscript notes: Note in black ink (slightly faded) on front cover, dated Meiji 14 (1881) reads: 日蓮註画讃相州鎌倉妙法寺住持日澄之所撰也.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Chūgasan 註畫讃 [註画讃]. Author/compiler: Nitchō 日澄, Nichiren priest, 1441-1510. Imprint: N.p., Fujita Munetsugu, Kan'ei 13, 1636. Kanki following batsu on fol. 8b of maki 5 reads: 寛永十三季歳在丙子 / 書林 藤田宗繼板行. Description: 5 kan, 1 satsu, rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 1) ff. [1] (序), [1] (目録), 6; (2) ff. 6; (3) ff. 9; (4) ff. 11; (5) ff. 8. 24.9 x 18.1 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 22.6 x 16.8 cm. (average). Double-line borders, with 'flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text with printed kunten. 10 lines to page, 20 characters to line. Renewed flimsy paper front cover of poor quality, without title slip. Manuscript gedai: 註画賛. Naidai at head of each maki: Chūgasan 註畫讃. Title from naidai at head of preface. Hashiragaki: Chūga 註畫 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: After the edition of Kan'ei 9 (1632) this is the second blockprinted edition, following a number of movable type editions, dated and undated, published between Keichō 6 (1601) and Kan'ei 4 (1627). Later blockprints were published in Kanbun 11 (1671), Tenna 3 (1683) and Bunka 11 (1814). Contents: An account of 32 major events in the life of Nichiren 日蓮 (1222-82), founder of the Nichiren sect.
