Scope and Content

Variant title: Zokushū keikoryaku 續集稽古略 [続集稽古略]. Author/compiler: Huanlun 幻輪, Chinese monk, fl. mid-17th century. Text edited by Yan Ergui 嚴爾珪. Imprint: N.p., n.d. (original Chinese preface (reprinted) is dated 崇禎戊寅歳, i.e. 1638). For date of this edition, see under Edition below. Description: 3 kan, formerly in 3 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 1) ff. 4 (1st preface, signed by editor), 2 (2nd preface, signed by compiler), 28; (2) ff. 30; (3) ff. 23. 26.8 x 17.5 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 21.2-22 x 15.4 cm. Single-line borders all round. Single fishtail design on hanshin. Vertical rules in preface and partially throughout text. Kanbun text with printed okurigana and kaeriten. 18 lines to page (small characters), 9 lines (large characters); 26 characters (small characters) to line. Original dark blue front cover of maki 1 only, with original printed title slip. Gedai: 支那撰述 (tsunogaki in a roundel) 續釋氏稽古畧一. Title from naidai at head of each maki. Hashiragaki: Keiko zokushū 稽古續集 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-cloth binding. Edition: Although lacking a kanki, this copy clearly belongs to the only recorded pre-Meiji Japanese edition, that published by Yao Kanbē 八尾勘兵衞, Kyōto, in Kanbun 3 寛文三年, 1663. Contents: A chronological account of events in the history of Buddhism in China from 1280 to 1627, including biographical notes on Buddhist monks. Continuation of an earlier work, Shakushi keikoryaku 釋氏稽古略, compiled by the monk Jue'an 覺岸 in 1354.
