No colophon. Manuscript note at end is dated Kakitsu 2, 1442 (see below). Description: 1 kan, 1 satsu, rebound in western style. ff. 1 [preface] , 35. 27.7 x 19.8 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 23.3-23.6 x 17.6 cm. Single-line borders above and below text; double-line borders at right and left of ff. 1-7, thereafter single-line. Vertical rules between columns. Single fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text with manuscript kunten in black and reading marks in red, both dating from mid-Muromachi period (c. 1400-50). 11 lines to page, 20 characters to line. Vermilion cover (front only), not original but added in early-Edo period and subsequently repaired, within a western style half-leather binding. No title slip. Handwritten gedai in an early-Edo hand: Rinzairoku zen 臨濟錄 全. Title from naidai. Hashiragaki: Rinzai 臨濟 + folio no. Edition: Gozan-ban, belonging to an edition not hitherto recorded in Japan. Like other Gozan-ban editions of this work, the present copy is based on a Chinese edition of the Song period, and on fol. 35b (printed from a re-cut block less worn than the rest of the text) appears the first line of the original Song 2-line kanki, reading: 住大名府興化嗣法小師存奘校勘. The first Japanese edition of Rinzairoku was published at Shōun'an 祥雲庵 in Kenninji monastery in Gen'ō 2 元応二年 (1320), and was followed by two re-cut editions, one repeating the Gen'ō 2 kanki, the other undated. The first line of the Gen'ō 2 kanki, lacking the date in line 2, has been copied in a mid-Muromachi hand on fol. 35b of the present copy, after the printed Song kanki. It reads as follows: 佛祖正宗貴久流傳因玆此録鏤板捨入祥雲庵. Further Gozan editions of this work were printed in Eikyō 9 永享九年 (1437) and Entoku 3 延徳三年 (1491). All of them differ from the present copy, which has an excellent hanshiki. Contents: Recorded sayings of Yixuan 義玄, also known as Huizhao 慧照, founder of the Linji 臨濟 sect in China, collected by his disciple Huiran 慧然. A Chinese edition of 1120 survives.

- Physical Description1 volume Condition: Good, though every folio has been strengthened by urauchi backing, thus repairing some worm holes. Impression: Atozuri, from badly worn blocks. Seals of ownership: Square blue seal, Zenrin zōsho 禪林藏書, on fol. 1a. Manuscript notes: Copious textual notes in margins, written in mid-Muromachi period, in addition to kunten, etc., noted above. Endnote on last folio (35b) is dated Kakitsu 2 (1442) and reads: 右板木在妙光寺方丈 ／ 嘉吉二年壬戌九月十三日圓日印寫之 ／ 住山 蘋齋老衲志焉. Above this, in a large Edo-period hand, is written: 他見無用. Note on mikaeshi, concealed by new endpaper: Zenrinji 禪林寺.
