      1 sheet Condition: Fair. Damage along original folds, but the whole map has been recently re-backed and wrapped round a perspex roller. Impression: Clear and sharp, from blocks showing only slight signs of wear. Seals of ownership: Octagonal British Museum stamp, MVSEVM BRITANNICVM, on verso of map, now obscured by backing paper.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: N. p., n.d. [1680-1688]. Description: Folding map, made up of 4 sheets pasted together. 365 x 1485 mm. Blockprint. Printing frame 337 x 146 mm. Single-line borders. Text-matter in kanji, with some katakana. Covers of original folded map missing, hence no gedai. No naidai. Edition: The map shows the Oyakuen 御薬園 which was established in1680 but not the Tōjin Yashiki 唐人屋敷 constructed in 1688 so must date from betweenthose dates. Contents: A large-scale pictorial map of the port of Nagasaki, hand-coloured, with sketches of Dutch and Chinese ships, showing also the island of Deshima. Panels at bottom left show Chinese, Dutch and other foreigners in costume, and two tables giving distances in ri of foreign ports from Japan and details of the town of Nagasaki.

Purchased from the estate of Engelbert Kaempfer by Sir Hans Sloane 1723-1725 and incorporated in the British Museum in 1753.
