Wamyō ruijushō 倭名類聚鈔 [倭名類聚抄]

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Minamoto no Shitagō 源順, 911-83. Imprint: Ōsaka, Shibukawa Seiemon, n.d. [c. Genroku period, 1688-1704 ?]. Kanki on fol. 31 of maki 20 reads: 書林 / 大坂心齋橋筋順慶町 / 澁川清右衛門. Following the kanki is an unnumbered folio inserted by the publisher Zeniya Sōshirō of Kyōto, with the following imprint: 京兆書肆 / 寺町通本能寺前 / 錢屋惣四郎. Description: 20 kan, formerly in 5 satsu, rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Satsu 1) ff. 3 (preface), 1 (hanrei), 2 (dai 題), 4 (mokuroku), 20, 15 (maki 1-3); (satsu 2) ff. 27, 18 (maki 5-8); (satsu 3) ff. 18, 23 (maki 9-12); (satsu 4) ff. 20, 19 (maki 13-16); (satsu 5) ff. 23, 31 (maki 17-20). 25.8 x 19.3 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 23 x 17.9 cm. (average). Single-line borders. Fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with printed kundoku, okurigana and kaeriten in katakana. 13 lines to page (large characters), 22 characters to line. Renewed light tan front cover of satsu 1 only, with renewed title slip on left bearing manuscript gedai: 倭名類聚鈔. Title from naidai. Title at head of hanrei: Shinkoku wamyō ruijushō 新刻倭名類聚鈔. Hashiragaki: Wamyō 和名 + maki no. + folio no. Contents: An early Chinese-Japanese dictionary, classified according to meaning, with examples of use drawn from Chinese literary works and with Japanese kun reading indicated in man'yōgana 万葉仮名. Compiled in Jōhei 承平 period, between 931 and 938.
