      2 volumes Condition: Excellent, apart from negligible worm damage. Impression: Sharp and clear. Seals of ownership: Three red seals, the first square, the other two oblong, on first page of each former satsu. (1) Tenkyō bunko 天橋文庫 (library of Honjō Munetake 本莊宗武). (2) Shima-ke zōin 島家蔵印. (3) Rokuonji 鹿苑寺 (seal of Kinkakuji 金閣寺). Manuscript notes: Corrections to single characters appear sporadically in the upper margin.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Kōchō ruien 皇朝類苑. Variant title: Shinchō kōchō ruien 新雕皇朝類苑. Author/compiler: Jiang Shaoyu 江少虞. Early 12th century. Imprint: N.p., [Go-Mizunoo Tennō 後水尾天皇] , Genna 7, 1621. Date following batsubun signed by the monk Zuiho, formerly of Nanzenji, at end of maki 78 reads: 元和七年重光作噩六月晦日 / 前南禪臣僧瑞保謹書印. Description: 1 (mokuroku 目録) + 78 kan, originally in 15 satsu, now rebound in 2 vols. western style.27.5 x 21.3 cm. Fukurotoji. Printed with wooden movable type (see under Edition below). Printing frame 23.1 x 17.6 ㎝. Double-line borders with fishtail design on hanshin. Vertical rules only in preface, ff. 1-7, and in batsubun, ff. 1-4. Kanbun text without kunten, except in batsubun (handwritten okurigana and kaeriten). Reading marks in red ink have been added liberally throughout the text, probably soon after the date of printing. 13 lines to page, 20 characters to line. Original fawn front covers of satsu 1 (jo 序 and mokuroku 目録) and of satsu 9 (maki 39-43) only, within modern western style half-leather binding. Title slips on left, of same coloured paper as cover, bearing handwritten gedai believed to be contemporary with publication of the work. Gedai reads: Kōchō ruien jo (etc.) 皇朝類苑序 (等), in sōsho. Naidai: Shinchō kōchō ruien maki dai 1 (etc.) 新雕皇朝類苑巻第一 (等). Hashiragaki: Kōchō maki 1 (etc.) 皇朝第一 (等) + folio no. Edition: Imperial edition (chokuhan 勅版), printed by order of Emperor Go-Mizunoo. The first Japanese edition of this important Chinese work. Third in the sequence of chokuhan. Main text printed in clear, regular kaisho; preface and batsubun in gyōsho script of larger size. Main text believed to be printed from wooden type. Imprint of original Song edition on which this Japanese edition is based appears as follows on fol. 7b of mokuroku: 紹興二十三年 / 癸酉歳中元日 / 麻沙書坊印行. Contents: An encyclopedic work containing literary / historical quotations arranged in classified order for easy reference.
