      1 volume Condition: Very good. Impression: Atozuri, from moderately worn blocks. Illustrations: Sumizuri woodcuts on every page depicting natural phenomena and manmade objects, two to each page (4 per folio). Seals of ownership: Octagonal British Museum stamp, MVSEVM BRITANNICVM, on last page of each satsu. Manuscript notes: Note on mikaeshi of satsu 1: This Book is in the old Character and is probably a Dictionary of Arts. Examined by Chetqua Decr. 17. 1770. Title transliterated (possibly in Kaempfer's hand) on title slip of satsu 8: Kinmodzui. Numbering and some transliterated headings in Kaempfer's hand in a few volumes. Note on paper slip pasted on mikaeshi of satsu 8 (probably in the hand of J. G. Scheuchzer) : The naturall history of Japan, in Chinese, their meteors, anatomy, arts, plants, animals etc. in Japonese language w. some notes of Dr. Kempfer ... Old shelfmarks, Pr. Or. 24, 19, 23, 20, 16, 17, 13, 11, written on mikaeshi of each satsu.

(Satsu 1) ff. 3 (preface 叙), 2 (hanrei 凡例), 36 (mokuroku 目録); (satsu 2 maki 1-3) ff. 6, 8, 9; (satsu 3-maki 4-7) ff. 11, 6, 7, 7; (satsu 4 maki 8-11) ff. 13, 11, 15, 19; (satsu 5 maki 12-13) ff. 9, 10; (satsu 6 maki 14-15) ff. 9, 44; (satsu 7 maki 16-18) ff. 5, 8, 7; (satsu 8 maki 19-20) ff. 11, 17. 272 x 191 mm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 231 x 180 mm. Single-line borders. Single fishtail design on hanshin. Text and illustrations on each page separated by vertical and horizontal lines. Hiragana-majiri text with printed furigana. Variable no. of lines to page and characters to line. Original mid-blue covers to all satsu, with original title slips bearing printed gedai: Zōho (tsunogaki) kinmō zui 増補 (角書) 訓蒙圖彙. Title from naidai at head of preface, hanrei and mokuroku. Hashiragaki: [no title] , maki no. and folio no. only. Edition: An undated edition in 8 satsu, probably published c. Enpō-Jōkyō period, 1673-1688. Contents: A popular illustrated encyclopedia, the first of its kind in Japan, consisting chiefly of illustrations with a minimum of text.
