Two kanki at end of maki 1 and 5 read, respectively: (1) 延文戊戌重開 ／ 善忠一巻刋行; (5) 延文戊戌重刊于 ／ 城州東山天潤菴. Other short kanki are printed at end of maki 10, 17, 18 (including a long kango), 19, 20, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27 (see GK, pp. 107-9 for full details). In addition the kanki and kango from the Jōwa 4 edition are reprinted at the end of maki 30. Description: 22 kan (of 30), bound in pairs in 11 satsu. Incomplete set, lacking maki 11-16, 25 and 26. (Full set: 30 kan in 15 satsu.) 27.5 x 18.5 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame variable between 21.7 and 22.5 x 16 cm. Single-line borders above and below text; mostly double-line (one thick, one thin) at inner edge of each folded leaf. Vertical rules. Fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with some manuscript kunten and reading marks (Muromachi period) in black and red. 13 lines to page, 22-25 characters to line. Brown covers, recently renewed. No title slips or gedai. Title from naidai. Hashiragaki: Den dai 1 (2, etc.) 傳第一 (二, 等) + folio no. In two modern chitsu cases of green and gold silk brocade. Edition: Gozan-ban, printed at the Tenjun'an, Kenninji 建仁寺. Second recorded edition of this work, printed partly from surviving blocks of the Jōwa 4 (1348) edition, many of which had been lost in the disturbances of 1355, and partly from re-cut blocks. The inter-relationship between Gozan editions of this work is highly complex (see GK, pp. 105-12), but it is clear at least that the present Enbun 3 (1358) edition contains a mixture of volumes printed from the original blocks of 1348 (notably maki 28-30, hence the reprinted Jōwa 4 colophon) and volumes for which the blocks were newly cut, with the support of a large group of monks. The names of many of these are listed at the end of maki 14, 17 and elsewhere. Two variant editions of the Enbun 3 reprint are distinguished by Kawase in GK (pp. 110-2), but the present copy clearly appears to belong to the earlier shoin-bon 初印本. Contents: A biographical work compiled by Daoyuan in 1004, tracing the lineage of Zen Buddhism to the seven Buddhas of the past and giving short biographies, or quoting the names, of 1,701 Chinese and Indian Zen masters. An important source for the history of Chan Buddhism in China.

Two folios in maki 2 have been replaced in manuscript. Impression: For the most part sharp and clear, except where the original blocks of 1348 have been used. Seals of ownership: None. Manuscript notes: Note on mikaeshi (front endpaper) of all satsu except 9 and 10: 太平山長勝寺大洞和尚常住置之. Note on back endpaper of each satsu: 勅特義鑒増輝格翁和尚再興之 ／ 于時慶長六天辛丑八月吉日書之. Textual notes on first folio of maki 1 and in upper margins throughout the work, dating from Muromachi period.
