Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Original work attributed to Zhou Xingsi 周興嗣 of the Liang Dynasty. Imprint: [Kyōto ?] , Umemura Yahakushi, Jōkyō 3, 1686. Kanki on fol. 94b reads: 貞享三年仲春穀旦 / 書林梅村 彌白子印. Description: 1 kan, 1 satsu, in a box. ff. 94. 131 x 192 mm. (yokohon). Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 109 × 168 mm. (average). Single-line borders. No fishtail design on hanshin. Vertical rules between columns. Kanji, with printed furigana (katakana). (Index) 7 lines to page, 8 characters to line; (main text) 6 lines to page, 5 characters to line. Original dark blue covers. Original title slip on left, with printed gedai: 五體 (角書) 畫引千字文 全. Title from naidai at head of index. Naidai at head of main text: Senjimon 千字文. Hashiragaki: Senjimon 千字文 + folio no. Contents: Text of the Chinese 'Thousand Character Classic' in five styles of script: kaisho, two forms of seal script, gyōsho and sōsho. With Japanese on and kun readings for each character. Main text preceded by an index arranged under number of strokes. Kanbun preface, dated Jōkyō 2 (1685), and batsu on fol. 94b.
