      1 volume Condition: Generally good, but with some stains and soiled folios. Impression: Atozuri, from moderately worn type. Illustrations: Two double-page sumizuri illustrations of a funeral procession (maki 4, ff. l0b-12a) and four small in-text sketches (maki 4, ff. 15b, 16a, 17a). Seals of ownership:Oblong red seal of Sir Ernest Satow, 英國薩道藏書, on first page of maki 1-4.

Scope and Content

Alternative readings of title: Shinpūki; Jinpūki. Author/compiler: Unknown. Possibly the work of Hikita Koremasa 匹田以正, who wrote and signed the preface. Imprint: Kyōto , Zeniya Gihē, n.d. (preface dated Kanbun 8 寛文八年, 1668). Kanki on fol. 20b of maki 5, preceding final batsu, reads: 堀川通西吉水町 / 錢屋儀兵衛刋行. Description: 5 kan, formerly in 5 satsu, rebound in 1 vol. western style. (1) ff. 4 (序 + 目録 + 凡例), 13; (2) ff. 1 , 29; (3) ff. 1 , 22; (4) ff. 1 , 19; (5) ff. 1 , 20, 1 . 262 x 190 mm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame. 210 x 158 mm. No borders. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text with printed furigana (katakana), interspersed with passages in kanbun with added kunten and kaeriten. 10 lines to page, 21 ji (kanbun) to line. Original mid-blue front cover of maki 1 only, within western style half-leather binding. Original title slip on left, with printed gedai: 神風記. Title from naidai at head of each maki. Hashiragaki: Kami 神 + maki no. + folio no. Edition: Undated, but with preface dated Kanbun 8 (1668); this appears to be the only pre-modern edition. Contents: An outline of the principles and moral teachings of Shinto since the founding of the Japanese nation, with an account of ceremonial rites celebrating the origin of various shrines. Quotations from basic Shinto works are interspersed throughout the text. The title is read Kamikaze no ki in Kokusho sōmokuroku 国書総目録 and Shintō shoseki mokuroku. Other reference sources prefer the reading Shinpūki or Jinpūki.
