Scope and Content

Variant title: Genji kumogakure shō 源氏雲隠抄. Variant title: Genji shō 源氏抄. Author/compiler: Unknown. In the case of maki 4 of this copy (Genji shō 源氏抄), this may possibly be from an edition edited and annotated by ASAI Ryōi 淺井了意, d. 1691. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [No colophon, but possibly datable to Enpō period, 1673-81.] See under Edition below. Description: 6 kan, 6 satsu, in a chitsu case. (Maki 1) ff. 9; (2) ff. 7; (3) ff. 8; (4) ff. 37-66; (5) ff. 3; (6) ff. 4. 27.4 x 19.1 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 20.5 x 17.4 cm. (average). No borders, except round illustrations. No printed hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with dakuten and some furigana. Passages in kanbun in maki 4 and in batsu at end of maki 6. 10 lines to page, 22-24 characters to line. Original dark blue covers with original title slips, centrally placed. Title slip of maki 4 retains fragments of original gedai: Genji shō 源氏抄. Title slips of the other 5 maki bear separate chapter titles (e.g 雲かくれ) as gedai. Chapter title + folio no. appear on each folio recto, at inner edge. Edition: This is a composite copy, combining elements from two separate editions. (1) Maki 1, 2, 3, 5, 6: 5 stray maki from the work Kumogakure rokujō 雲隠六帖, published as an appendix (附録) to a rare edition of Genji monogatari 源氏物語 datable to Enpō period 延宝 (1673-81), of which a copy is held in Ryūmon Bunko. (2) Maki 4: one isolated maki (gedai: Genji shō 源氏抄, naidai: Kumogakure shō 雲隠鈔), probably from the annotated edition of this work by Asai Ryōi 淺井了意 entitled Genji kumogakure shō 源氏雲隠抄, first published in Enpō 5 延宝五年, 1677. This is the only one of the 6 kan to contain notes or commentary, and is clearly of a different edition from the other 5, though similar in date of printing. Contents: A work of unknown authorship, believed to date from Nanbokuchō or Muromachi period, purporting to supplement the text of Genji monogatari with six additional short chapters dealing with Hikaru Genji's renunciation of worldly life and his subsequent death. This apocryphal addition to the Genji story ends with a spurious okugaki 'signed' by (1) 信誉, abbot of Ishiyama-dera, and dated Kōhei 1 (1058), and (2) by 藤原親兼 dated Gen'ō 1 (1319). The work was first published independently, with explanatory notes, by Asai Ryōi in 1677.
