      1 volume Condition: Very good, apart from minimal worm damage towards end of furoku 附録. Impression: An early impression, shozuri or near. Illustrations: Sumizuri vignettes illustrating incidents from Japanese history, alluded to in the text, occupy the upper quarter of each page. Style lively and evocative. Artist not named. Seals of ownership: Red seal in a double-line decorative frame, Tokuko 牘庫 (seal of Naitō Fūko 内藤風虎) on first page of each maki.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Shinpo yamato nendai kōki eshō 新補倭年代皇紀繪章 [新補倭年代皇紀絵章]. Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: Edo, Fushimiya Heizaemon; Ōsaka, Itamiya Tarōemon; Kyōto, Igaya Kyūbē, Yoshinoya Jirōbē, Genroku 5, 1692. Kanki on fol. 24b of maki 6 (preceding furoku 附録 - maki 7) reads: 元禄五年壬申初夏吉日 / 江戸・・・ 伏見屋兵左衛門 / 大坂・・・ 伊丹屋太良右衛門 / 京・・・ 伊賀屋久兵衛 / 京・・・ 吉野屋次郎兵衛 / 仝梓. Description: 6 kan+appendix (furoku 附録), formerly in 7 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (1) ff. 30; (2) ff. 31; (3) ff. 31; (4) ff. 29; (5) ff. 33; (6) ff. 1-23 (maki 6), [2] (blank, with printed rules), 24 (kanki); (7) ff. 30 (preface 序 + index-furoku). 22.4 x 16.5 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 20.1 x 14.8 cm. (average). Single-line borders, with horizontal rules separating text from illustrations in upper quarter of each page. Single fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text with printed furigana. 14 lines to page, 20-22 characters to line. Original grey-green front cover of maki 1 only with central panel (pasted on at a later date ?) listing contents of maki 1. Title slip on left with printed gedai: Zōho 増補 (tsunogaki 角書) nendaiki eshō 年代記繪抄. Naidai at head of text of each maki: 新補倭年代皇紀繪章. Hashiragaki: Nendaiki 年代記 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: The earliest edition. Followed by other editions in Hōreki 2 (1752), Meiwa 2 (1765), Meiwa 7 (1770), An'ei 2 (1773) and Tenmei 1 (1781). Contents: Chronological annals of Japan from legendary times up to 1692, illustrated for popular reading. An appendix following maki 6 contains a preface signed by Sankei 三徑, and an index to the whole work, in iroha イロハ order, entitled 新補倭年代皇記繪鈔附錄早鑑.
