This series contains correspondence of Lord George Augustus Henry Cavendish, 1st Earl of Burlington from 1831. For the most part the letters are to his nephew, William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, although a small number are to other recipients and there are also some copy letters included.
Topics covered in the letters include local (Derbyshire) and national politics and elections; family matters, including the education and careers of Lord Cavendish's grandsons (his son having died in 1812); and matters concerning the Duke's estates. Significant topics mentioned include the Pentrich Rising of 1817; discussions with the Duke of Rutland relating to potential land exchanges; the death of Elizabeth Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (widow of the 5th Duke) in 1824; and the appointment of the 6th Duke as Lord Chamberlain in 1827.
