In these letters Lord Spencer writes to his nephew who he addresses "My dear Nephew", concerning: Mr Petrie, Keeper of the Records in the tower [of London] wishing to consult a missal [liturgical text] in the 6th Duke's possession at Chatsworth; his good opinion of the 6th Duke's talk to the House of Lords; the wrong missal being sent owing to Lord Spencer's mistake about the listings in Dibdin's Bibliographical Decameron; confirming it is Bishop Ethalwold's missal that Mr Petrie wishes to consult; a description of the missal, a bound folio manuscript on vellum; his wish that the 6th Duke will be able to attend an election meeting of the Roxburghe Club (CS1/672/5); his approval of the 6th Duke's motion and lodging his proxy with Lord Grey; talking to Mr Petrie about Mr Madden and on Mr Powell's recommendation suggesting him for the museum under the patronage of the Archbishop of Canterbury; his refusal to come to Bolton for the sport owing to his age and reduction in exertion; the honour the King means to bestow upon the 6th Duke (CS1/672/10); arrangments to see his nephew; his application for a chaplaincy for his friend Dr Dibdin; his thanks for a book, thought to be a juvenile production of Inigo Jones; his thanks for securing Dr Dibdin the chaplaincy of the King; his request that the 6th Duke attend to a request of Mr Ellis's [Principal Librarian of the British Museum]; his refusal to visit Chatsworth on account of his gout and rheumatism; his hope that the 6th Duke may be able to stop using his crutches soon; his wish for the 6th Duke to visit Althorp and being able to accomodate him on the ground floor.
