The author writes to Lord Hartington concerning his pleasure at Lord Hartington's appointment as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and his good character boding well for an easy administration. He writes of his illness and the complaints of the tenants of the Burlington estates in Ireland who are struggling to pay rent owing to the decay of their industries and his empathy for their situation. He adds that he wishes to show the Lismore estate to Lord Hartington, should he find himself doing some travelling around Ireland. He also writes about establishing what papers remain in Lismore and Mr Ellis taking them back to London. He mentions letters from the 16th and 17th century belonging to the 1st Earl of Cork in books. He also mentions land let to build barracks and Mr Croty wishing to enclose woodland at Ballyrafter and wishing for direction from Lady Burlington and Lord Hartington on the matter.
