Scope and Content

In these letters Richard Scott writes to Lady Burlington concerning: the rectory of Stoke which he was assured by the archdeacon was resolved to be given to him by the Bishop when the Bishop left his house last summer. He writes concerning his request that he be recommended to Lord Burlington for the vacant position at the rectory of Kighley (made vacant by the death of Mr Collins); the ten children in his care (2 of whom are his sister's) and his own wife's poor health meaning the vacancy would make a large difference to their livlihood and is within Lady Burlington's power to grant. In his last letter he writes of the death of his wife Mrs Scott which has resulted in his plea to Lady Burlington to help him by asking the Lord Chancellor or Bishop, on his behalf, to bestow a little living upon him so that he might provide for the ten motherless children he looks after and be brought out of the debt he is in (CS1/207/2).
