The author writes to the 3rd Duke concerning the Jacobite rebellion and the progress of the rebels as well as the men of war ships with Dutch troops arriving to join the defence against the rebels. He mentions the lack of arms and sending for his own from Birmingham and the surrender of Carlisle Castle. This group of letters also includes a copy letter received from Robert Steward of Tensley by the Earl of Malton of a report from Robert and Ann Ashton that there are arms concealed in the private rooms of the Duke of Norfolk's house and at Worksop Manor.
