Letters from Elizabeth Murray (née Finch) Countess of Mansfield to Dorothy Boyle (née Savile) Countess of Burlington

In this series of letters Elizabeth Finch writes to her niece (by her half-sister Mary Finch). Despite the difference in generation the two women were almost the same age and both employed in the royal court. Finch keeps Lady Burlington abreast of news and events whilst Lady Burlington is away from London in Bath. She writes in a colloquial, conversational tone on topics.

Also included in this series is a bill from the taylor J. Drom, signed by him, October 1737 [CS1/230.12].

Lady Elizabeth Finch was baptised on 11 May 1704. She was the daughter of Daniel Finch, 7th Earl of Winchilsea and Hon. Anne Hatton. She married William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, son of David Murray, 5th Viscount of Stormont and Marjory Scott, on 20 September 1738. She died on 10 April 1784 at age 79.

From 20 September 1738, her married name became Murray. After her marriage, Lady Elizabeth Finch was styled as Countess of Mansfield on 31 October 1776.
