Scope and Content

In these letters to Lady Russell, Rachel Spencer writes asking after her health and her own travels. She mentions the rectory at Stockport that her brother gave to a clergyman. She describes visiting Buxton and then to the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth; she asks Lady Russell to speak to the Dukes of Devonshire and Rutland on her behalf for a favour with which she requires assistance. She mentions Lady Byrne, her sister Warren and Mr Edward Warren. Her second letter includes mention of: her investment in the South Sea company and her pondering on whether the stock will go up or down in value and how this may affect her; her intention to wait on Lady Russell when she arrives in town; her anticipation of news from the Duke of Devonshire and his friends concerning "this grand affair that concerns so many in this nation"; her sister's wishes for Lady Russell and her intention to visit on her way to Oxfordshire. She also mentions Lord Sunderland and his son.
