The author writes to the 3rd Duke concerning the Jacobite Rebellion and intelligence he has received about the rebels entering Edinburgh, the Dutch troops in Burlington Bay and the subscription of £5000 agreed at the meeting in York. He promises his obedience to the Duke concerning any commands he may have for him. He also mentions: an enclosed letter with more intelligence from Sheffield; a suggestion of a meeting at Chesterfield with other local gentlemen; the lack of arms; sending for arms from London; neighbours making the best preparations they can; the county raising few men; sending any fresh intelligence he received to the Duke.
