Letter from Edward Chandler, Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield to William Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Devonshire

The author writes concerning inhabitants of the parish of Tutbury who live in great ignorance and libertinism. He asks the Duke to think of a morally upright and zealous minister to succeed Mr Manlove who is now dead, in guiding and leading these inhabitants. He mentions that he had to deprive him of doing clandestine marriages and that he had few morals. Now that he is gone, the author writes to tell Lord Devonshire that the vicarage has been augmented with the Royal Bounty and charity of a 'Native'. He adds that it still needs its noble patron's encouragement (financially) and asks him to send a man that will deserve such a parish. Written from Eccleshale. Signed 'E. Cov. e Lich.'
