Scope and Content

This small series of letters from Philip Stanhope before he became 3rd Earl, to his father-in-law, the 1st Marquess of Halifax, concerns: a letter from Sir William Stanhope concerning the tenants who will not pay their rent to Mr Chalenour until next month and only in the presence of Lord Stanhope; Lady [Stanhope]'s desire for him to be at Etrop with her; bringing the estate out of debt and an account of the woods, estate and how Lord [Halifax?] was cheated by all his officers; ill weather preventing his journey to Shelford; a dispute between Lord Stanhope and [Elizabeth] Lady Stanhope and her family about him staying in the country and not living in the town owing to his health and lack of money; travelling to Bretby; his gratitude for Lord Halifax's kindness to him and his disappointment at having to tell Lord Halifax of his troubled marriage. He writes that Lady Stanhope talks despisingly to him. He writes concerning his belief that Lady Stanhope has never loved him; his resolve to be in the country because she continues to be cold and unloving with him ever since they were married; and his proof of how he has treated her in the way he supported her in her labour.
