Scope and Content

This group of papers is made up of items that show the provenance of some artworks bought, sold and conserved by the Burlingtons and Devonshires. It includes receipts, bills, auction catalogues, memoranda and letters.

The items included are:

- sale catalogues in which paintings bought by Lord Burlington are identified (CS1/134/0, 134/1, 134/2)

- a financial account for the pictures cleaned by John Van der Vaart, 21 Dec 1727;

- receipts for pictures bought by Dorothy Boyle née Savile, Lady Burlington, including: at the Kent sale; by Dahl; and a portrait of Charlotte Boyle by George Knapton;

- a list of paintings belonging to Lady Elizabeth Cavendish née Compton, Lady Burlington.

Administrative / Biographical History

After the marriage of the future 4th Duke to Charlotte Boyle, eldest daughter of the 3rd Earl of Burlington and her early death in 1754, artworks in the Burlington family collection eventually became part of the Devonshire collections.
