Scope and Content

These letters from Mary to Lady Russell are written over the period in which she transitioned from being Princess of Orange to becoming Queen of England.

Mary writes of: the great respect she has for Lady Russell and her desire to be friends; her sorrow at the suffering Lady Russell has endured and wishes for the restored health of her son; her wish to be of help to Lady Russell; her approval of Lady Russell's daughter being married to Lord Cavendish (son of the Duke of Devonshire); assurance that the King will wish to do as Lady Russell desires; reflections of their shared perspective on the world being an unhappy place; her anguish on the King's behalf; success in Ireland and not in Flanders or at sea; Lady Russell's petition; news of Mr Russell [Admiral Russell]; Lord Bedford's good health.
