Scope and Content

This sheet contains four alphabets and codes for varying letters and numbers provided with instructions on how to write and decipher what is written and provided with characters for reference.

The sheet is endorsed: "Earl of Southampton's characters" and in a later hand by a 'T. Tellwood' is the following explanation: "In these charaters are characteristics of every person of public note at that time, [inter] caterers The Earl of S. marks himself himself virtue and Sir William Russell 'soldier'."
