The author writes to Lord Burlington concerning intelligence he has received about the Jacobite rebels and their movements at and around Carlisle. He also mentions: his regret at missing Lady Charlotte's birthday; the Pretender in effigy mounted by the city taken/loyal to his cause; cutting down of woods by the rebels to erect their battery.
