Holt, nicknamed 'Tiny' due to his large size, was born near Oldham on 18 May 1903 and was educated at William Hulme's Grammar School Oldham and the University of Manchester. He held a number of resident appointments and was a travelling scholar before being appointed chief assistant to Professor Burgess in 1934. Holt held a number of appointments at Christie, Manchester Northern and Withington Hospitals and was surgeon at St Mary's. During the war, Holt served in the RAMC and was appointed OBE. In 1945 Holt returned to civilian practice as consultant surgeon at MRI and Christie Hospital, specialising in breast cancer and thyroid disease. Holt was a member of the Association of Surgeons, the Moynihan Chirurgical Club and the Manchester Surgical Society.
