MacGregor undertook his medical education at the University of Edinburgh and held junior appointments at Leicester Infirmary and Ancoats Hospital Manchester before settling in general practice in Didsbury, Manchester. He was a member of the Royal Medical Society in Edinburgh and of MMS.
