Lorimer studied medicine at the Universities of Edinburgh and Paris. He applied for the position of physician's assistant at MRI in 1871. Lorimer was resident physician to the Devonshire Hospital, Buxton, before settling in general practice in Buxton. Lorimer was a fellow of the Medical Society of London and of MMS.
