Mayers was born in Liverpool on 18 December 1937 and was educated at Liverpool Collegiate School and the University of Manchester. After qualifying, Mayers held resident appointments at Withington Hospital Manchester, Hope Hospital Salford, Rochdale Infirmary and St Mary's Hospital Manchester. He was later appointed consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at Bolton and District Group of Hospitals. Mayers was a member of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society.
