Kerr was born in New Brunswick and settled in Winnipeg as a schoolmaster. When the Manitoba Medical School was started Kerr became one of its first medical students, before finishing his studies at Edinburgh University where he was also demonstrator of anatomy. Kerr was an assistant in Haddington before moving into general practice in Horwich, Lancashire. After a few years he moved to Manchester where he had a large general practice in Higher Broughton. Kerr was an active member of BMA and took a leading role in the 'Salford Scheme'. After the first war, Kerr retired to San Remo. He died in London on 10 May 1938, at the age of 77.
