Hall served as a medical apprentice to his father, Richard Edward Hall, and later studied at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. From 1779-1790 he was a honorary surgeon at MRI. In 1790 he resigned with his brother Edward from the MRI, and set up the Lying-in Hospital. Hall was also surgeon to the Royal Manchester and Salford Volunteer Corps. Hall was a member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society.
