Mumford was the son of Arthur Mumford (see above). He graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1920. He spent most of his career at the Manchester and Salford Hospital for Skin Diseases. He was also a physician in the VD department of MRI and 1931 became head of the department of dermatology, and honorary dermatologist at Park Hospital [later Trafford General]. He also worked with the Christie Hospital Manchester to develop radiotherapy clinics to deal with skin malignancies. He was a former secretary of Manchester Dermatological Society from 1922-9, and secretary of the North of England Dermatological Society in 1929-30, and its president in 1939 and 1947. Mumford's expertise as a dermatologist was recognised by his very large private practice. As a student, he edited Manchester University Medical Students Gazette.
